The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Akonta Mining Company Limited Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has stated that Ghana should have had a gold bank long time ago.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the Morning Show, on Movement TV and Wontumi Radio in Accra, Chairman Wontumi as he is affectionately called said, “people misconstrued me of being arrogant by showing gold bars on live TV, but what I was doing that time was letting Ghanaians know that gold is the real cash that can propel the country to prosperity if managed well”.
In order to succeed in the Oil for Gold policy, Chairman Wontumi suggested that the government should engage the expatriate mining firms and purchase about 20 to 40 per cent of their gold proceeds to sustain the policy.
He called on all legit mining firms to come together and throw their weight behind his proposal for a gold bank to be set up in Ghana- explaining that setting up a gold bank would be a foundation for investors and Ghanaians to be given huge loans for business operations which would impact positively on the economy.
