First Vice chairman for Dome Kwabenya constituency, Paul Opoku, says government should return to E-levy and increase it by 4% and forget the Domestic Debt Exchange Project.
Speaking in an interview with Kwaku Dawuro, on Movement In The Morning, on Movement TV/Wontumi radio, Paul noted that the government should resort to the the E-levy since the Domestic Debt Exchange Program(DDEP) is being opposed by Ghanaians. According to him government can find other ways of generating funds from the citizens.
He said that ”There could be other ways we can mitigate pensioneers because thanks to Ghana card, there is availability of data, so if we add and engage everyone, we can find out from them if there is another way for them to get some subvention for their water bill, light bill and medical bills for this period without profit. There could be so many ways but just as my brother said, it didn’t go as planned but i believe when the government made it calculation, it concluded on working with only 10%, but decided to go and try the waters which would get the people to agree to it, then we make the money twice or three times.
When people oppose for us to live to with the 10%, we can live with it but in relation to what my brother said, if the debt exchange is a problem, then another means will be for us to revert to the E-levy and make it 4 or 5%. That way no one’s money will be stuck in bonds and everyone would have to pay. You’ll be surprised people ranting about the bonds are those who have no business with it.”
