National Coordinator for Dr. Akoto Afriyie’s campaign team, Peter Obeng Darko has expressed the readiness of the former Agriculture minister to contest in the flagbearership race of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He noted that the team has considered the electoral college elections in its plans and thus they are ready for it, in case the need arises as stated in the communique issued by the General secretary.
He stressed that the was the urgent need for the party to encourage its grassroot base and that is what Dr. Afriyie Akoto’s team has started.
“You need to tell party folks what you are capable of doing for them. You need to let them build trust in you. As it stands, there seems to be apathy and differences among party folks and thus one ought to show and prove that he is capable of ensuring that the party gets united”, he said.
Speaking on Movement in the morning show on Movement TV/ Wontumi Radio, he made reference soldiers on a war front. “If the soldiers you’re going for the war with are reluctant, how do you win the war? You need to build some confidence in them”.
He added that the NDC has never won elections with 51% right from 2000 till date. In 2008, they won the elections with 50.02%. In 2012 they won with 50.06%.
However, the NPP won the 2000 elections with 56%, in 2004 with 54% and in 2016 with 54% with almost One Million, Five hundred thousand popular votes.
“Even in 2020, NPP won the elections with 52%. This is a clear indication that when party folks are treated well and they are happy, NPP will continue to win elections and that is exactly what Dr. Afriyieo B Akoto’s team intend to do”, he concluded.
