NPP-USA Chairperson, Obaayaa Amponsah Frimpong, has bemoaned the rate at which vote-buying has eaten int0 Ghana’s politics.
She laments over the negative impact the canker has had on the kind of leaders that are elected. Most electorates are influenced to vote for candidates who are not competent and capable of leading yet are rich so could buy the votes.
“It’s becoming worrying, the rate at which money is playing a key role in influencing votes in Ghana…it has been the worry of America for a long time…if we don’t exercise restraints, it will get to a point whereby our democratic process can no longer be controlled…”, she said.
She suggested that the best way to curtail the money being pushed into our body politics is that electing of Flagbearers for the various parties shouldn’t be left for delegates only.
“I’m a member of the party and I pay my dues…I’m equally active with the conduct of activities in the party and as such, as an active and good dues paying member of the party, I should have the opportunity to elect leaders for the party, although I’m not a delegate…that should be it and this is the reason we are pushing for the one member, one vote agenda…with this, candidates can no longer influence delegates with their monies…when it happens so, every member cast their vote based on policies and competencies”, she disclosed.Â
