NPP Parliamentary candidate hopeful for Okaikwei constituency, Maame Afia Akoto, has noted that former President Mahama’s “24-hour economy” promise is dead on arrival.
According to her, Ghana is already running a 24-hour economy and thus, such a promise at such a time, doesn’t hold water.
“Ghana’s major problem is not about running a 24-hour economy…it’s about moving from importation to production…we should be manufacturing everything we use here in Ghana…that’s what we need now as a country…with all humility, I’m pleading with Mahama to first support the government to establish more factories…This is a party that already has the vision and I’m therefore urging Mahama to support such vision…once the market booms up, we can say we are ready to run a 24-hour economy…”, she told Kwaku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning show on Movement TV.
“In any case, we are already running a 24-hour economy kind courtesy the introduction of digitalization. So, what then is he insinuating. Are teachers going to teach at night…? Is that the 24- hour economy he wants to run…Are farmers and carpenters going to work at night…we shouldn’t be saying things because we think we ought to do so…”, she added.
She stressed that although the country is in hard times, NPP government has done a yeoman’s job by implementing policies to salvage the situation.
This comes after the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has proposed a “24-hour economy” policy as a crucial initiative for transforming the Ghanaian economy.
Mr. Mahama contends that this policy will address the pressing issue of Ghanaian youth embarking on perilous journeys across the Sahara and the Mediterranean in search of better opportunities in Europe.
