Consider Registering Eligible Voters At All Times- Clement Wilkinson Recommends A Continuous Registration

The Municipal Chief Executive of Amasaman, Honourable Clement Wilkinson, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC), to consider new regime that eligible prospective registrants would go to a district office of the commission to be registered as a voter.

This comes after CSO, individuals and groups are mounting pressure on the Electoral Commission (EC) to extend the days for the limited voter registration exercise.

The registration exercise, which commenced on May 7, is expected to end on Monday, May 27, 2024, but political parties and civil society have called on the EC to extend its deadline.

Speaking on Movement In The Morning show on Movement TV/ Wontumi Radio, Honourable Wilkinson noted that if considered, the new regime would ensure an all-year-round registration of Ghanaians who turn 18 years and those who had not been previously registered.

Unlike the existing periodic registration system where eligible Ghanaians were only registered at stipulated times, the new paradigm would ensure that eligible voters registered at all times.

“I recommend, as a long-term measure, the implementation of electoral reforms that will include the adoption of a continuous voter registration exercise. This will ensure that eligible Ghanaians who turn 18 can walk into designated EC offices to get registered with ease”, he told Kwaku Dawuro.
