The world’s premier club football competition, the UEFA Champions League, continues with an awesome slate of 18 matches across Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 November 2024.
Tuesday’s action gets going with PSV Eindhoven and Slovan Bratislava hosting Girona and Dinamo Zagreb respectively in the early kick-off slots (19:45 CAT), before the heat is really turned up in the late evening (22:00 CAT) with a battle between Real Madrid and AC Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
‘Los Blancos’ and the ‘Rossoneri’ are the two most successful teams in Champions League history (15 and seven titles respectively) and will be meeting in the competition for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
Both teams enjoyed home wins in their last Champions League clashes, with Milan downing Club Brugge 3-1, and Real coming from behind to crush Borussia Dortmund 5-2 in a repeat of last season’s final.
“The main thing is that we believed in ourselves. This is our house, full of our fans, and in those circumstances absolutely anything can happen!” exclaimed Vinicius Junior, who netted a brilliant hat-trick against Dortmund.
Tuesday will also feature Liverpool playing host to Bayer Leverkusen – a match which sees the German club’s manager, Xabi Alonso, return to Anfield in search of a high-profile win over one of his former clubs.
The pick of Wednesday’s matches comes from the iconic San Siro, where Inter Milan will play host to Arsenal, as well as the Parc des Princes, as Paris Saint-Germain play host to Atletico Madrid.
Atleti will be hungry to bounce back from a shock 3-1 loss at home to Lille in late October, with manager Diego Simeone admitting that they are going through a tricky phase.
“The team played a great first half, one of the best of the season, but it’s a cruel competition. If you don’t score goals, you’re out. Lille had three chances and they scored all of them. This tournament is complicated, we’re going through a difficult time and next we have a very tough game against Paris,” said the Argentine.
Wednesday will also feature Barcelona away to Serbia’s Red Star Belgrade (also known as Crvena Zvezda), Bayern Munich hosting Benfica, Aston Villa will continue their European adventure away to Club Brugge in Belgium, and a potential thriller between VfB Stuttgart and Atalanta.
