Ghana’s Black Stars have dropped four places in the latest FIFA rankings, now sitting at 77th globally. This decline follows a disappointing end to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign.
Previously ranked 73rd in October, Ghana also remains 14th in Africa, lagging behind continental giants such as Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt. The fall in rankings reflects the team’s poor performance in the qualifiers, where they secured just three points from six matches.
The campaign ended on a sour note, with a 1-1 draw against Angola and a shocking 2-1 home defeat to Niger. These results left the Black Stars at the bottom of Group F and out of contention for AFCON 2025, a significant setback for one of Africa’s historically strong football nations.
Niger, a fellow Group F team, capitalised on their improved form, jumping nine places to 122nd globally. This further highlights Ghana’s struggles during a challenging year in international football.
Ghana’s best FIFA ranking in 2024 was 67th, achieved in February. Since then, the team has experienced a steady decline, culminating in their current 77th position in November. Despite this, their 14th spot in Africa places them ahead of Zambia and Gabon but behind the likes of Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.
Looking ahead, the Black Stars aim to regroup and rebuild as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, set to begin in March. This will be an opportunity for the team to restore their reputation and regain momentum on the international stage.
Meanwhile, Argentina continues to lead the global rankings, followed by France. Spain and England have closed the gap in third and fourth, while Brazil retains fifth place. Notably, there have been no changes in the top ten since July.
For Ghana, the immediate focus will be addressing the challenges exposed during the AFCON qualifiers and laying a foundation for future success.
