Afenyo-Markin Honours Police Invitation Over Alleged Assault

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to assist in investigations into the alleged assault of a policeman.

The Police confirmed this in a statement on its Facebook page.

The Service explained that the Effutu MP’s appearance followed an official request to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

The alleged assault, which has sparked widespread condemnation, reportedly occurred during a demonstration against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on Monday, May 5, 2025.

In a viral video, the lawmaker was captured visibly agitated while appearing to attempt to hit a policeman identified as Constable Forson behind a barricade during the protest.

However, the Effutu MP clarified in a statement that his reaction was in protest against the actions of an officer he identified as Constable Forson, denying allegations that he was the aggressor.

He alleged that Constable Forson struck him forcefully in the chest near his heart as he approached the barricade to present a petition.

Afenyo-Markin noted that senior police officers and colleagues promptly intervened, offering him water to help him regain composure before he proceeded to present the petition.

Following the Police’s invitation, Mr. Afenyo-Markin also lodged a formal complaint and petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate and take disciplinary action against the said policeman.

Meanwhile, the Police have indicated that both investigations are ongoing and Ghanaians will be updated accordingly.
