Accra Flood Continues To Be Deadly: 18 Year Old Dies Chasing After Her ‘’Flip Flop’’ In Yesterday’s Heavy Downpour – NADMO PRO Discloses

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) for National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr. George Ayisi Boateng, has revealed the death of an 18-year-old girl who died chasing after her “flip flop” which got carried away by the downpour in the early hours of Sunday, 5th June 2022.

According to Mr. Ayisi, the said girl whose name is yet to be disclosed got swept off by the heavy flood while trying to save one of her flip-flops from being carried away by the heavy rains.

While speaking with Kwaku Dawuro on the flood situation on Movement In The Morning Political Show, he said, ‘’we had calls from some flooding spots yesterday and it was reported in one of the communities that an 18-year-old have died chasing after her flip flop during the heavy rains. This is very pathetic and it could have been avoided if she had allowed it to go away. Floods have become deadly due to the poor drainage systems, jeopardizing the lives of citizens and destroying properties- our life is more important than our possessions and money, we need to be extra careful.’’.

He added that the poor drainage systems in the city are not enough and the ones that are built are too shallow to allow the free passage of the rain pours before it drains or evaporates. This is he says is the cause of floods across the capital.

“Instead of people making back yard farm and garden to trench the water when it rains, they are building pavements and putting pressure on the next available gutter’’, he stated.

He advised citizens living in flood-prone areas to be extra careful during rains and ensure all electrical gadgets are always off anytime it rains.

“Pay attention to the weather forecast and information given by Meteorologists, avoid dumping solid waste in gutters, and parents should prevent their children from playing in the rain’’, he stressed.
