The Ghana Voucher project is an initiative under the Technical, Vocation and Education Training (TVET) under the Ministry of Education that is geared toward providing skills trainers with innovative skills to meet the current demands.
The deputy Minister for Education in charge of TVET, Hon Gifty Twum Ampofo on Thursday 9th June, 2022 explained the Ghana Voucher Project when he joined Kwaku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning Political show in the studios of Movement TV.
She said, ‘’the German government and KFW bank brought 1 million euros to Ghana in 2015 to help in skill training but the rule was that before we access the fund we needed counterpart funding which is 10% of the money before we could access the fund. In January 2015, the government of Ghana could not raise the money so when President Akufo-Addo assumed office, the Ministry of Education together with the Finance Ministry came together to raise the counterpart funding to start the Ghana Voucher Project’’
The target for the Ghana Voucher project are cosmetology, consumer electronics, welding, fashion design, plumbing, electrical installation, block laying and tilling, catering and hospitality.
Explaining the motive behind the project Hon. Twum Ampofo said that the program is designed for master craft persons who are often called ‘master and madam’, apprentice and workers to meet quality criteria and improve access to decent employment.
She disclosed that these group of people come together to form association for easy identification.
She noted that when a trainer signs unto the program, his or her apprentice is automatically signed on and they are given a daily amount of 10 cedis.
“The first phase trained over 1500 master craftsmen and by the end of the second phase we will train about 4700 master craftsmen’’, she stated.
