Deputy General Secretary, Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahene has said that the outcome of the Assin North by-elections is not a predictor for the constituency’s election in 2024.
Speaking on James Gyakye Quayson’s brouhaha, he referenced to some previous by-elections that took a different twist at the main elections. He made mention of Central, Western and some part of Eastern region where the dynamics changed unexpectedly.
He said, “By-elections dynamics are not easily predictable, it has no relations with the outcome of general elections. You can win the by- elections and lose at the general elections even when you take the seat a year to the elections ’’.
He added that although he applauds the supreme court for ensuring the effectiveness of the law, the Member of Parliament’s (MP) disqualification saddens him.
“I call on parliament to implement “The People’s Representation Bill (ROPA)” to enable Ghanaians outside exercise their franchise, and amend the dual citizenship law to give Ghanaians in the diaspora the chance to take up parliamentary roles without renouncing their second citizenship” he added.
The supreme court has disqualified the former Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson after he sent an appeal to the court on his injunction. Today, the court has declared the seat vacant and by-elections is set to take place soon.
The general secretary for the National Democratic Congress, Asiedu Nketiah, has revealed that the former MP will go for the by-elections unopposed.
