Barbie has danced past The Avengers at the domestic box office.
Barbie has surpassed the 2012 Marvel movie as the 11th-highest grossing film at the domestic box office after earning $626 million since releasing into theaters in July, according to Variety. This is higher than The Avengers‘ $623 million.
Ahead of Barbie at the domestic box office are Jurassic World ($653 million), Titanic ($674 million), Avengers: Infinity ($678 million), as well as Avatar: The Way of Water ($684 million). At number one stands Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($936 million). None of these ticket sales were adjusted for inflation.
Barbie’s box office news comes after it became Warner Bros.’ biggest movie of all time after hitting $1.34 billion at the world box office in August.
Warner Bros.’ previous all-time hit was 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, which generated $1.341 billion in theaters globally after its release.
Barbie also became the highest-grossing film of 2023 in August, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This came after Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became Warner Bros.’ highest-earning domestic release ever.
Barbie stars many big names such as Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera and Issa Rae. The movie follows Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Gosling) as they navigate life in the real world, away from Barbie Land.
“Of course, I’ve known who Barbie is for forever,” Gerwig told PEOPLE ahead of Barbie’s release. “And there’s some sort of collective memory that I wanted to tap into, something about: We invent things like dolls to explain to ourselves what it means to be human.”
“Part of me wondered if there was a way that we could allow the doll to also have that humanity,” she added. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Queen of Plastic was given something real?”
