Residents of Bibiani Old Town and Zongo in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region have staged a protest against Asante Gold Corporation, demanding relocation due to severe health and safety concerns linked to the company’s mining activities.
The residents highlighted the devastating impact of frequent blasting on their health and livelihoods.
They reported that the blasts have caused significant structural damage to their homes, with walls and foundations developing cracks. Massive dust clouds generated by the blasts settle on their homes, food, and water sources, exacerbating health risks.
Speaking to the media, protesters shared accounts of respiratory illnesses, including asthma and bronchitis, which they attribute to prolonged exposure to dust and pollutants.
Additionally, they alleged that the company’s operations have contaminated their water sources, rendering them undrinkable. The mining activities have also reportedly destroyed farmlands, depriving residents of their primary source of income.
Zakari Mubarik, Assemblyman for the Bibiani Zongo Electoral Area, joined the residents in appealing to Asante Gold Corporation to relocate affected communities to a safer area.
The residents are urging the company to address their grievances and prioritize the well-being of the affected communities.
