A communications team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Felix Osafo- Marfo, has urged the Bank of Ghana to control the creating of dollar accounts in the country.
According to him, this contributes to the depreciation of the cedi against the international currencies and therefore should be clamp down.
His suggestion comes on the back of recent lamentation over the current state of the economy.
“As we speak, the UK for the first time in almost forty years is experiencing hardship they haven’t been through before- and it’s the same in Germany. I have a friend in Italy who is also complaining bitterly over what they are going through”, he told Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the morning show.
Adding that “Ghana is not an exception, but there are things we must do to stop the depreciation of the cedi against the dollar. The creating of dollar bank account should be controlled. There are times, dollar become scarce, but you get some when you visit the black market. These people are able to get the money in the system. So, the question is; where do they get it from?”
He noted that during a conversation with a man who is an NDC member, and their conversation was based on the dollar, and according to the man, whenever the cedi loses its value against the dollar, he deposits dollars into his dollar account.
“So, for someone like this all he wishes for is that the cedi depreciates which will inure to his benefit. This is the reason President Akufo-Addo has said that we should be citizens and not spectators”, he said.
