The Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Evans Opoku Bobbie, has observed that the sports infrastructure under the Akufo-Addo led administration is unprecedented and enviable.
According to Hon. Opoku Bobbie, the NPP can proud itself as the party in the country which has invested heavily in sports infrastructure since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
He allayed the fears of Ghanaians about the country’s preparedness to host the All-Africa Games in August next year, by touting the progress of work so far by the government.
Speaking with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the Morning on Movement Television and Wontumi Radio, the Deputy Sports Minister who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Asunafo North, noted that the country stands to benefit a lot during and after the games- commending the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for securing a loan for the sporting facilities for the All-Africa games, particularly the Legon sport stadium”
Stressing that “it will be used as a game village, where all officials who will be coming from other countries will stay. That has given us the opportunity to renovate the Liman Halls at the University, after several years of lacking renovation. The good thing about this is that it will be owned by the institution even after the games. Just about three weeks ago, when we went for site meeting, I was impressed by the work done so far and per the timetable we’ve been given, they will be able to finish within the time frame”.
He added that the project started during the tenure of former President John Agyekum Kufuor but came to a halt when power switched to the NDC- and within its 8 years in office, nothing was done.
He challenged the NDC to tell what exactly they were able to do during their 8 years tenure, as far as sporting facilities are concerned.
“Ex-President kuffour delivered two (2) sports stadia Tamale and Essipong during his tenure and rehabilitated both Accra and Kumasi stadia”, he said.
Fascinatingly, President Akufo-Addo has also instructed the other indoor games should be held at borteyman- because his vision is that after the event, the borteyman sports facility will be converted to University for Sports and Development- because there’s no school in West Africa that studies sports. So, this is a legacy he wants to leave.
