Labour expert and consultant, Austin Gamey has called for the dissolution and reformation of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) board of directors.
He posits that SSNIT is not supposed to be the property of government but the contributor therefore, organised labour must wake up and demand for change in the management of SSNIT.
“The board of directors must be changed. People with the knowledge and far reaching experience who are committed with the desire to develop this nation must be appointed to the board,” he explained.
He added that it is the board of directors who take decision on what, where, when and how to invest pension funds.
Mr. Gamey in an interview with Alfred Ocansey on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show emphasised that Pension is a complete national security issue and could be a death trap if not well managed. Thus; pension does not only affect only the working class but also the unemployed because some of the unemployed are dependent on pensioners.
He entreated the media and organised labour to pay critical attention to pensions and hold SSNIT and government accountable to ensure that the welfare of pensioners are safe.
“It is only the media and the organised labour that are to ensure that pensions are paid and well managed. Pension is in more trouble as Ghana goes for debt restructuring which is termed as taking a haircut” he admonished
The labour expert alluded that there wouldn’t be a need for the Ghana government to go to the IMF for any bailout if SSNIT funds are well managed. SSNIT alone can provide all the money we need if the fund managers are actually doing their work as it must.
Meanwhile the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has expressed their displeasure over how pensioners have not been paid their past credit by SSNIT for some months thereby putting hardships on them.
