The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the rank and file of the party not to despair over their poor performance in last Saturday’s general election since it is still possible for the party to win the next polls in 2028.
He said inasmuch as losing an election was painful, all was not lost. He, therefore, called on them to unite and rally behind the party for a comeback in 2028.
Dr Bawumia, who was addressing members of the party from four constituencies in the Greater Accra Region, also advised members against indulging in blame games.
The NPP supporters who thronged the residence of Dr Bawumia at Cantonments in Accra yesterday morning were from Klottey Korle, Ayawaso East, Weija-Gbawe and the Trobu constituencies.
Solidarity
The party faithful sang and blew vuvuzelas at the residence of the Vice-President to solidarise, encourage and wish him well after his loss to the President-elect John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 presidential election last Saturday.
Dr Bawumia attributed the poor performance of the party to members not turning out to vote rather than the popularity of the NDC.
He said it was obvious from the statistics of the election result that the NPP handed the victory to the NDC.
Dr Bawumia, however, said that God never makes a mistake and, therefore, what happened was the way of God, adding “When the time is right, God will make it happen”.
He thanked the supporters from the four constituencies for their loyalty while urging them to stay true to the course of the NPP.
Commitment
The NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Klottey Korle Constituency, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, on behalf of his colleagues, pledged their continuous support to the party, saying “I still believe everything is possible, although we didn’t get what we wanted”.
“We believe in your policies and we will continue to support you. We are there for you,” he added.
Mr Nortey further congratulated Dr Bawumia on his efforts in the elections and said the NDC did not perform better than the NPP “but our party people did not help”.
The NPP Member of Parliament-elect for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, also described Dr Bawumia as a “classic leader”.
He, however, expressed concerns over some ugly happenings in some parts of the country in the aftermath of the polls.
Mr Shaib appealed for calm and cool heads to prevail as preparations were being made to hand over the mantle of leadership to former President Mahama.
He prayed for long life and strength for Dr Bawumia, entreating all to support him.
For his part, the NPP Member of Parliament-elect for the Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency, Elder Emmanuel Tobin, also urged the Vice-President not to be discouraged.
He also assured Dr Bawumia of the support of members of his constituency.
