Deputy Minister for information, Honorable Fatimatu Abubakar, says the failure of one of Government’s plans to help revive the economy which was e-levy, lead Ghana to go to the International Monetary Fund(IMF).
Speaking in an interview with Kwaku Dawuro, on Movement In The Morning, on Movement TV/Wontumi radio, Hon. Fatimah noted that IMF was never included in Government’s plans, rather it had the intention to be self reliant in reviving the economy hence, the implementation of E-levy which failed, leading Ghana into IMF. According to her Government targeted to gain Gh 6,000,000,000Â by the end of 2022 from E-levy.
She asserted that ”Do you know we were able to reach staff agreement in a space of six months after we announced of going to IMF. We never had the intention of going to IMF to seek their support in 2022, because we had plans which would have made us self reliant to be able to revive the economy. Plans such as the e-levy was introduced by the Government, and intended that if we get the participation at levels estimated to attain, we would have raised the tune of Gh 6,000,000,000 by the close of 2022. But we all know what happened with e-levy, talk of the back and forth we had regarding when to pass it. Again people found different strategies to escape participating in the e-levy which lead to a great fail, so it didn’t help government.”
