The Director of Elections, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, has fired back at critics who accuse the Electoral Commission (EC) of bias towards the ruling government.
He challenged opposition parties to explain their allegations, asking them to reveal what they do with the EC when they are in power, a reason for which whenever they are in opposition, they tend to accuse the EC of being in bed with the EC.
Speaking on Movement In The Morning show on Movement TV with Kwaku Dawuro, Dr. Quaicoe emphasized that the EC operates based on the laws of the land, which do not recognize a government in power or opposition. He stressed that the power to determine election outcomes lies with Ghanaians, not the EC.
He explained that even if a political leader, like Dr. Bawumia or former President Mahama, were made EC chairperson, they would still be unable to manipulate election results. Results are collated at polling stations, constituency, and national levels, and any attempts to tamper with them would be exposed.
Dr. Quaicoe’s comments come amid accusations from opposition parties that the EC is biased towards the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, the EC has consistently maintained its independence and commitment to free and fair elections.
This latest response from the EC director is seen as a strong defense of the commission’s integrity and a challenge to opposition parties to substantiate their claims.
