The Municipal Operations Director for NADMO in New Juaben North, Twumasi Kankam, has said that human activities coupled with engineering works should be blamed for the perennial flooding.
This comes after one hundred residents of Amanase in Ayensuano District were on Saturday, October 1, 2022, displaced as river Ayensu also over flooded its banks following days of torrential rainfall.
The floods entered homes, shops and almost submerged significant part of the community.
Speaking to Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the morning show on Wontumi Radio/Movement TV on Monday, the municipal Director disclosed that a life was lost following the torrential rains.
“The victim, whose room was flooded and as such, decided to seek refuge outside and was taken away by the flood and the victim, is believed to be in the mid 30s. The situation was not peculiar to Akwadum alone, as many communities including Asokore Zongo, Abrewa Nkwanta, bright future and in fact many areas including Oyoko and Suhyen were not spared”, he said.
He disclosed that even the alternatively route which were demarcated for the residents on Sunday, in Nyamekrom, Obuotumpai also became deplorable making it difficult for vehicle and human to ply.
Stressing that “this is the first time we are witnessing such a disaster since the 1960s and this problem is linked right from Kyebi, Abuakwa North and South. Moreover, once the densu river is full, there’s no way it could contain other streams that connects through it like the bediekyire stream and therefore will be left with no other option than to find its way into the communities”.
“Human activities coupled with engineering work must be blamed for this. Because whenever it rains, you will realized that the water that flows through the gutters are engulf with a lot of filth. This tells how we contribute to this menace as citizens”, he added.
