Ga Homowo: Ban On Noise-Making Begins Today

The one-month ban on all forms of noise-making and drumming in Accra takes effect today, May 12, 2025, and will end on June 12, 2025.

The ban forms part of preparations for the celebration of the Homowo festival by the Ga people.

It affects all forms of noise-making, including the use of loudspeakers, drums, tambourines, funeral rites, and roadside evangelism.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) noted that the ban applies to all residents, communities, and institutions under its jurisdiction.

A task force, in partnership with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), local assemblies, and the Ghana Police Service, will monitor compliance. Legal action will be taken against those who violate the directive.

It is important to note that, according to Ga Dangme custom, the Homowo festival is not celebrated on the same date throughout the Ga State.

Therefore, the traditional areas of Osu, La, Nungua, Tema, Kpone, Prampram, and Ningo will announce separate bans after June 12, 2025, and provide specific details for their individual celebrations.
