A lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Afriyie, has stated that illegal mining, or galamsey, cannot be eradicated in Ghana under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
He made this assertion during an appearance on the Wontumi morning show, alleging that the NDC is involved in and supports illegal mining activities.
According to Dr. Afriyie, the current government’s lack of awareness about illegal mining, compared to the previous administration, indicates a lack of willingness to combat the issue.
This claim is substantiated by recent reports of NDC officials allegedly engaging in illegal mining. For instance, a brother of the Western North Regional Chairman of the NDC was accused of forming an illegal task force to intimidate miners while engaging in galamsey.
Dr. Afriyie warned that if the government doesn’t take decisive action by June or July, the situation will worsen.
