The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has called for prayers following the passing of Pope Francis, as the Church prepares hearts for the election of his successor.
This call was contained in a statement issued by the Bishop of Sunyani and President of the GCBC, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi.
The Conference urged schools, seminaries, and other Catholic institutions to organise prayer services, talks, and discussions to help the faithful — especially the youth — reflect on the life and legacy of Pope Francis.
As part of its tribute, the GCBC also announced that a National Memorial Mass will be held in honour of the late pontiff at a date yet to be determined.
“All bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful who are able to attend will be warmly invited to participate in this solemn liturgy,” the statement said.
Additionally, the Conference encouraged all archdioceses, dioceses, and parishes to organise local requiem Masses and special Holy Hours in memory of Pope Francis.
“These should be moments of prayerful reflection on his teachings and witness,” it added.
The Vatican officially announced the death of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21. The 88-year-old pontiff had been discharged from hospital only weeks earlier after treatment for an infection.
Pope Francis, who succeeded Pope Benedict XVI following his resignation in 2013, was widely admired for his humility, compassion, and commitment to the marginalized.
Meanwhile, preparations for the conclave — the process for electing a new pope — are expected to begin soon, typically held 15 to 20 days after the death of a pontiff.
