The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi Constituency in the Eastern Region, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has stated that Ghana would have celebrated a threshold of fifty ministers, rather than sixty, under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had won the 2024 election.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, Oppong Nkrumah asserted that an NPP-led government would reduce the number of ministers to fifty in a future administration.
“Mr. Speaker, I am tempted to comment briefly on the remarks made by the Minister for Education in celebration of what I will call the new threshold of sixty ministers.
“As commendable as it is, to the extent that we are making remarks that are worth capturing, we should also acknowledge that if the election results had been different, we would be celebrating fifty ministers instead of sixty. The new threshold of sixty is worth celebrating, but in the very near future, we will be celebrating fifty under an NPP administration,” he said.
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, prior to the 2024 general election, promised to appoint not more than fifty ministers if elected President.
Speaking at the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto Launch in Takoradi on August 18, 2024, Dr. Bawumia explained that he would implement an efficient governance system, with a key component being the reduction in the number of ministers of state.
He pledged to implement economic policies that would sustain Ghana’s recovering economy. Dr. Bawumia noted that while Ghana’s economy was rebounding, it was crucial to continue policies that would lead to macroeconomic stability and improved economic conditions.
On the other hand, President Mahama the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer had also promised to govern with sixty ministers.
