Constituency first Vice Chairman for the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP), in the Okaikwei South, Daniel Nkrumah, has said that the failure of the Electronic Transaction Levy(E-levy) to generate the expected revenue is due to the many adopted ways by Ghanaians to dodge the tax by and not because it’s a bad tax.
According to him, Ghanaians are always crying for development but are not ready to pay tax.
“Nobody enjoys paying tax but always lamenting over the lack of developmental projects in our communities. We have borrowed so much and in a bid to ensure that we are able to generate funds internally, the E-levy was introduced but here lies the case that Ghanaians are not ready to pay. How do we develop the country? Meanwhile, we are always comparing the country to other developed countries- these countries did that by paying tax”, he told Kwaku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning Show.
He explained that “our revenues remain very low as compared to other countries; debt levels are dangerously high and yet we are not ready as a country to pay taxes. How then do we stop borrowing? About 80% of our revenue goes into the paying of salaries therefore what can the remaining 20% do?”
He noted that the revenue to be generated will be beneficial to the citizenry- adding that although Ghanaians like it when their communities are developed, they fail to do what is expected of us.
“Let’s stop such habits and come together to help develop the country”, he concluded.
