In an apparent response to Mr. John Mahama over calls for President Akufo-Addo to relieve Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta of his post as Finance Minister, Chairman Wontumi has stated that it is rather the former who has run out of ideas and would be “sacked” by Ghanaians in 2024.
Mr, Mahama claims Mr. Ofori-Atta, who has been serving in the role since 2017, has not lived up to expectations in the management of Ghana’s economy.
“Those directly responsible for the economic crisis must bear responsibility, and it is inconceivable that the Minister of Finance [Ken Ofori-Atta] remains at post. Having presided over the worst economic meltdown in Ghana’s recent history, the president must, as a matter of urgency and without further delay relive the Minister of Finance of his position,” Mahama said on Monday at an event organised by the opposition National Democratic Congress dubbed ‘Ghana at a crossroads’.
But the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Anwti-Boasiako, believes the call which was made by Mr. Mahama was borne out of a politician filled with “desperation” and “jealousy”.
According to him, it was irrelevant for the 2020 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to pick on Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta; knowing very well that he came to meet an economy that was in shambles.
Speaking to Wontumionline.com, Chairman Wontumi explained that “Before Ken was appointed by President Akufo-Addo, John Mahama’s administration has left behind an economy that was christened ‘dumsor economy’. It took the Finance minister to raise money to settle debts that was owed for the country to have better power system. Isn’t it strange that John Mahama is rather calling for the head of this noble man?”
Under the leadership of Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Chairman Wontumi pointed out that policies such as Planting for Food and Jobs, One Village One Dam, One District One Ambulance, Free Senior High School program etc, have been realized because he has been able to mobilize funds to ensure its smooth operation.
He ended by noting that he believes the good works of the NPP government would be put on a scale for Ghanaians to judge in the 2024 elections adding that he has a firm believe that “Ghanaians would rather sack John Mahama and not Ken Ofori-Atta”.
