Deputy Minister for Education in charge of TVET, Gifty Twum Ampofo has advised parents to take out colonial mentality about Technical and Vocational Educational Training (TVET).
According to her, the NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo has invested much into TVET and hence the need for young ones to take up such courses in order to help reduce the backlog of youth unemployment.
Speaking to Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the morning show on Wontumi Radio/Movement TV, the lawmaker noted that “the wider world needs skilled and competent workers to fill skill gaps in various sectors which includes; building and construction, power and energy plants, water distribution hospitality and agro-processing, among others”.
“In addition, we need highly-skilled technical personnel to drive the agenda of transforming our economy through value-addition to primary commodities, and natural resources,” the Minister said.
She argued that a well-developed and functioning TVET system is best placed to train the skilled workforce which Ghana needs to address its socio-economic development challenges and also reduce youth unemployment.
To this end, she said the Ministry will continually strive to improve the relevance and quality of training, integrate ICT into TVET, and ensure flexibility of training and life-long learning in TVET provision.
