Ghanaian rapper and presidential aspirant in the ongoing University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) race, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, also known as Guru, has been disqualified.
In a letter released on August 16, 2024, and signed by the electoral commissioner of the UGSRC, the rapper and his running mate, were disqualified over their non-resident status in accordance with Article 30 (1) (a) of the UGSRC constitution.
Article 30(1)(a) of the UGSRC says that, ‘A student shall not be qualified for election to any executive office unless: (1) He is qualified to contest elections under his hall’s constitution, except that a provision requiring a student to be in at least his third year in this university shall not disqualify such a person from contesting for any office under this article.’
Article 30(1)(a) makes it a key qualification criterion for an aspirant of an executive position of the UGSRC to be eligible to contest for an executive position at the residential level and also to be a resident student of the university.
