The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is raising concerns over the reconstruction of Kantamanto Market, urging traders to pause the rebuilding process.
Following a devastating fire in January 2025 that destroyed hundreds of shops, GNFS emphasizes the need for proper fire-resistant materials, fire detection systems, and collaboration with fire service officials.
Alex King Nartey from the GNFS highlighted the risks of using wood in the construction, calling for safer, more resilient materials.
He warned that without adequate safety measures, another fire disaster could occur.
The GNFS has called for consultations with traders to ensure that proper safety standards are integrated into the market’s reconstruction.
