A Deputy communications Director for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has asserted that under the tenure of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), more taxes were introduced.
Buttressing his allegations, he said that under Mills’ era, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) introduced more taxes in the country to the extent that he even introduced what was termed as the tax last project.
Adding that late Mills was much focused on taxes- as he made taxing the citizenry a project in the country, as he passed a number of laws projects in this country.
“After John Dramani Mahama had taken over from late Mills between 2014 and 2016 alone, about 26 tax components were introduced. VAT rate was equally increased from 12.5% to 15%. 17.5% VAT on pharmaceutical products was imposed. But the taxes introduced by the NPP government exempts pharmaceutical products”, he said.
He made these known when he joined the discussion on Movement in the morning show on Movement TV/ Wontumi Radio.
He explains that as a government you don’t just tax the citizenry. You ought to do so strategically- by identifying commodities that are of importance to the people.
Under Mills’ era, he said that taxes are used for developmental projects and aside taxation, there was no other means by which the government could develop the country. He said that on several platform. So, what has changed now?”, he quizzed.
“They introduced 26 taxes. They had no issue doing that during their tenure. But find fault with the NPP government doing same. They expect Nana Addo to develop the country with money from his own coffers. When you’re in opposition and you decide to condemn or speak against whatever the government in power does, you might be shooting yourself in the foot”, he stressed.
