Former Member of Parliament for Ayensuano constituency, Honourable Ayeh- Paye has dismissed allegations that he’s campaigning against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the flagbearership position on religious grounds.
He challenged whoever that has evidence to back such allegations to come out with it.
“It’s never true and I’m challenging whoever that has said I’ve sent circulated message across board or called people not to vote for Dr. Bawumia as flagbearer of the party because he’s Muslim, to come out with evidence. In any case, you can go to MTN for records of my text messages and calls- because book don’t lie”, he told Kwaku Dawuro on Movement in the morning show”.
He explained that he has a lady friend, whom he’s known for so many years because he bears the same name with the lady’s teacher who happened to be his uncle and that’s how come they established the friendship.
“It was during the yuletide she sent a seasonal message, but I only read it two days ago. I realize he had posted Bawumia’s picture on his Facebook wall so after seeing her message on WhatsApp, I only said Ei! my Presby friend and you’re supporting a Muslim candidate and we all laughed about it. I never mentioned Bawumia’s name”, he said.
Adding that “I’ve screenshots of the messages. I never said when we elect Bawumia we wouldn’t win the elections. Apart from this lady, whoever that has any evidence should come out with it- Because the speculations are creating the impression that I’ve said Muslims are second club.”
According to him, what he sought to explain was the fact that majority of the Ghanaian populace are Christians. It’s just about 17% of Muslims, and therefore the NPP had higher chance of winning the elections if they present a Christian candidate. “I enjoy the peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians”, he added.
This comes after one Facebook user, Ms. Wendy Akufo, revealed on her page how the leading Alan Campaign Coordinator, in the Eastern region and a former NPP MP for Ayensuano Constituency, advanced religious bigotry in a desperate attempt to get her not to support the Vice President’s flagbearership bid, because he is a Muslim.
“As old as you are, if you want to convince me to your side, the only thing you could think of is religion,” Wendy Akufo angrily wrote on her Facebook page.
