Victims of the June 3rd twin disaster of flood and fire that occurred at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in 2015 say they are yet to receive any form of support or compensation from any government seven years on.
Lamenting to Kwaku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning Political Show, the President of the June 3rd Flood and Fire Victims Association, Thomas Sakyi, said life has become tough after the disaster and that the only help they have received since the disaster was from the Benin government and other organizations.
According to him, some of them still go for treatment at the hospital, and some have also gone mad, while others have died.
”No government has given us any form of compensation”, he said.
He explained to Kwaku Dawuro that the only funds received by the victims after seven years, are from a Two Hundred Thousand Dollars($200,000) donation by the government of Benin in 2017, which was later disbursed to them by National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly(AMA) on the 29th of June 2019, after several attempts had proven futile.
“I have a lot of issues to deal with as a victim. Some of us have been forced to sleep on the streets, some are injured for life and others are battling for their lives as they still need some surgeries they cannot afford,” he cried.
The challenges of victims of the June 3 disaster are many and burdensome. Yet, they bear all these while the persons and institutions responsible for their suffering walk free. The entire nation was thrown into a moment of shock and of mourning following torrential rains that claimed over 150 lives and destroyed properties worth thousands and millions of Ghana cedis after the twin disaster on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.
