Lawrence Ati Zigi Named Swiss League MVP After First Round

Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi has been named the most valuable player in the first round of this season’s Swiss Super League for his exploits with St Gallen.

Ati Zigi beat two attackers and two midfielders to take home the top prize. Midfielders David Douline and Valon Fazliuric of Servette FC and FC Aarau, as well as forwards Cedric Itten and Koro Kone of BSC Young Boys and Yverdon Sport FC, respectively.

Ati-Zigi’s team are third with 24 points after claiming seven wins, three draws and six losses in 16 matches. While keeping the post, he has guided his side to second place in terms of goal difference with +9 goals just behind league leaders Young Boys who have 17 more. He made 58 saves out of 14 matches in the first round.

The former Sochaux goalie has cemented the no.1 position of St. Gallen, having joined in 2020 and making 103 league appearances.

He played for the Black Starlets and Black Satellites before eventually earning invitations to the Black Stars. His recent performances earned him a spot in the starting lineup of the national team with the 26-year-old playing all three matches at the 2022 World Cup for the Black Stars.

Ati Zigi is expected to return to action for St. Gallen when the Swiss Super League resume in January.
