National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Nana Boakye, has alleged that former President Mahama is planning to remove the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, and pack the Supreme Court with sympathetic judges.
According to Nana Bee, as he’s affectionately called, Mahama’s intention is to have the Supreme Court interpret the Constitution in a way that would allow him to run for another term as President.
He claims that Mahama believes he can circumvent the two-term limit for Presidents, as outlined in the Constitution, by arguing that his previous term was non-consecutive. Nanabee asserts that Mahama plans to achieve this through a favorable interpretation of the law by a Supreme Court dominated by his appointees, rather than seeking a constitutional amendment, which would require parliamentary approval and a referendum, which is likely to be unsuccessful if attempted.
“The Constitution clearly states that no individual can run for the office of the President beyond two terms. However, Mahama believes that since he didn’t serve consecutive terms, he can run again. This interpretation would require a sympathetic Supreme Court, which is why he’s allegedly planning to remove the current Chief Justice and appoint his own loyalists.” Lawyer Nana Boakye emphasized.
He described Mahama’s alleged plan as “evil and wicked” and has called on citizens to rise against it, warning that it poses a threat to the country’s democratic principles. “This is a power play to undermine our democracy. We must stand against any attempts to manipulate the judiciary and undermine the rule of law, “Boakye warned.
