Spokesperson for the Ministry of Works and Housing, Manasseh Atta Boahen has alleged that former President Mahama is never committed to ending illegal mining.
According to Boahen, Mahama has not only failed to combat illegal mining but is also encouraging people to engage in it.
Speaking on Movement TV/Wontumi Radio’s Morning Show with Gordon Asare Bediako, Boahen stated that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flag bearer, is trying his best to fight against illegal mining.
He emphasized that over one million Ghanaians are involved in the mining sector, directly or indirectly, and it is essential to provide employment opportunities for these individuals to address their financial challenges.
“To tackle illegal mining, the government has introduced several initiatives. The anti-galamsey tax aims to identify and penalize unauthorized mining activities, generating revenue and discouraging illegal practices. Additionally, the community mining scheme recognizes and regulates mining operations, ensuring environmental and social responsibility through registration, licensing, environmental impact assessments, community engagement, and benefit-sharing”, he stated.
He noted that the government has also launched Operation Halt to combat illegal mining and associated crimes through increased surveillance, confiscation of equipment, prosecution of offenders, and collaboration with local communities. This operation builds upon the foundation laid by Operation Vanguard, initiated during President John Agyekum Kufuor’s tenure to combat illegal mining, logging, and environmental crimes.
Atta Boahen commended the Ghana Police Service for their professionalism during the Democracy Hub demonstration, allowing peaceful protest without harm. However, he stressed that campaigning for Mahama should not involve wearing political t-shirts.
Boahen acknowledged that gold mining has contributed significantly to Ghana’s economy but noted that lack of awareness and adherence to regulations has fueled illegal mining.
He praised Dr. Bawumia’s efforts to address this complex issue and promote responsible mining practices.
