Deputy Director in charge of protocol for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Frimpong, has strongly criticized former President John Mahama’s intention to expand the capital city to the Volta Region.
Frimpong argues that the Ashanti Region, being the second largest in Ghana, should have been considered as the commercial capital instead.
He expressed deep disappointment and dismay that Mahama never appointed any prominent individuals from the Ashanti Region to his cabinet during his tenure, despite the region’s significant contributions to the country’s development.
Frimpong draws parallels with Nigeria, where Abuja serves as the capital and Lagos as the commercial hub, suggesting that Ashanti Region should have been the natural alternative to Greater Accra.
Frimpong’s comments imply that Mahama’s decision is a deliberate snub to the Ashanti Region and its people, and he believes that Ghanaians should be aware of Mahama’s perceived bias against the region.
He stated, “It’s not surprising that John Mahama has indicated that he has intentions to expand the capital town to the Volta region…Shouldn’t Ashanti region have been the commercial capital in Ghana since it’s the second-largest region? He doesn’t have Ashanti region at heart.
