The wind of change blowing across the world in the lines of Women Football, breezed itself along the the ever maturing Ghana Women’s Premier League (MGWPL). With Malta Guinness as a headline sponsor on board in tandem with the demotion of Immigration Ladies, Sea Lions, Kumasi Sports Academy, Savannah Ladies and the promotion of Ridge City FC, Essiam Socrates, Soccer Candy and Tamale Super Ladies, football fans are in for a beautiful season.
Northern Ladies and Prisons Ladies kicked off the season at the Aliu Mahama Stadium with a goalless draw on Friday October 7th.
The Southern Zone had their fair share of the new season early Saturday morning when Thunder Queens struck their way through a 2-1 victory against Police Ladies at the Presec School Park.
Two assist from Matilda Quao and goal each from Gifty Osei and Ellen Gyemaah. While Thunder Queens ascended the throne at Presec, travellers Faith Ladies lead by Coach Reginald Asante silenced Soccer Intellectuals with a goal to nil.
The biggest match was Hasaacas hosting Berry Ladies as the banter and behind the scenes activities post match left fans wanting more. But try as Berry Ladies may, Hasaacas proved too strong for them. As the “Doo Girls” piped the travellers 1-0.
All was set for the official opener on Sunday at the Madina Astro Turf between two debutants Ridge City and Essiam Socrates Ladies.
The heavy downpour couldn’t stop the game on the pitch or the excitement off the pitch. In the end, Essiam won by 3 unanswered goals.
