National Team Coaches Must Make Bold Decisions – Stephen Appiah

Former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah has called on national team coaches to make bold decisions, regardless of the consequences.

His comments come amid scrutiny of current head coach Otto Addo, particularly for excluding Andre Ayew from the last two call-ups.

Speaking before the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports on Tuesday, Appiah emphasized the importance of leadership in decision-making.

“As a leader you have to lead,” Appiah, who captained Ghana for it maiden World Cup appearance in Germany said.

“There are certain decisions that is not popular with the players but you have to take them.

He acknowledged that some decisions may not be well-received by players but insisted they must be made.

“Now I am not seeing that in the team. Now, I am not seeing a captain leading the team. When it happens like that, players will think they can do whatever they want,” he added.

The Black Stars are set to regroup for their upcoming match against Sudan in the third round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers next month.

Otto Addo and his team are determined to secure their first victory following a rocky start to the qualification process.
