Ghana’s Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has expressed optimism about the future of public schools in Ghana.
Speaking at the launch of Ashanti Regional Bawumia 2024 (B24) conference at Ratary Park in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, he highlighted the significant progress made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in the education sector.
According to Dr. Adutwum, one of the notable achievements is the implementation of free Senior High School (SHS) education.
The program, which initially started with a double-track system, has now been largely phased out, with only about 30 schools still operating under this system.
The Minister also highlighted the infrastructure development in various public schools across the country. For instance, the Accra STEM Academy has benefited from a completed assembly and dining hall. Similarly, Kumasi Anglican Senior High School has eight newly constructed science laboratories, while Ahantaman Girls Senior High School in Cape Coast has also received completed science laboratories.
Minister Adutwum emphasized that these developments demonstrate the NPP government’s commitment to improving the quality of education in public schools.
He noted that public schools are now attractive options for parents, dispelling the long-held notion that they are inferior, often referred to as “chew and pour.”
