The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a fresh process for a rerun of its internal elections in the Akwatia Constituency to elect polling station executives, electoral area coordinators and constituency executives.
Some aggrieved members of the New Patriotic Party in Akwatia sued the party in the Koforidua High Court last year, asking the court to declare the last internal constituency election held null and void over some major irregularities.
The NPP did not challenge the claims of the plaintiffs, but rather pleaded with the court to allow the party settle the matter internally and ensure that the proper electoral process as enshrined in the party’s constitution is adhered to.
The party in light of the court’s judgment and a resolution by the National Executive Council directed the regional executives to see to a fresh election conducted in Akwatia.
The election process is expected to commence with the opening of nomination for Polling station executives from January 20, 2023.
Elections for the Polling station executives are expected to be held on the 27th and 28th of January 2023 while elections for Electoral Area Coordinators are scheduled for the 2nd of February, 2023.
Nominations for the constituency elections are to be opened from the 3rd of February to the 4th of February while vetting, appeals and voting is scheduled for the 6th, 7th and 11th of February, 2023 respectively.
Eastern Regional Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party, Evans Osei Yeboah disclosed to JoyNews’ Maxwell Kudekor that the party expects all stakeholders to cooperate with the election committee and the regional leadership to have a successful process.
He assured all stakeholders of free and transparent elections with the ultimate goal of winning the Akwatia parliamentary seat for the NPP.
