The Ashanti regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has noted the NPP will not allow Mahama to avoid a presidential debate, stating, “We will force Mahama to debate”.
Speaking in a recent interview on Wontumi TV with Oheneba Asiedu, Chairman Wontumi addressed former President Mahama’s campaign promises and the need for a presidential debate.
He pointed out the inconsistency in Mahama’s statement, during their campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday.
“Mahama said he doesn’t want to make promises but promises not to disappoint Ghanaians. Is that not a promise too? He just doesn’t have any policy to share with Ghanaians but just doesn’t know how to go about it, and thus, says he doesn’t want to promise”, he said.
Wontumi emphasized that Ghanaians deserve to know the truth and the plans of their leaders. He stressed that the debate is crucial for Ghanaians to make informed decisions in the upcoming election.
Wontumi highlighted the current economic challenges faced by Ghanaians due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. He noted that the NPP government has implemented measures to mitigate the effects of these crises, including settling utility bills for Ghanaians.
He also discussed the country’s GDP, which dropped from 7.5% in 2018-2020 to 0.5% during the peak of the pandemic. Wontumi attributed the decline to the global economic downturn and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on Ghana’s imports.
Despite these challenges, Wontumi highlighted the NPP government’s achievements, including:
– Providing every constituency with a brand-new grader, roller, water tanker, backhole, and tipper truck
– Allocating 1 million cedis for fuel to operate these vehicles
– Constructing new roads and repairing deplorable ones
– Ensuring fair distribution of resources through policies like the ambulance distribution program, where every constituency received some ambulances
Wontumi emphasized the NPP government’s commitment to ensuring everyone gets a fair share of resources and benefits. He reiterated that the presidential debate is essential for Ghanaians to hold their leaders accountable and make informed decisions.
