Renowned Ghanaian musician Teddy Osei, co-founder of the iconic Afrobeat band Osibisa, has passed away at 88 in London on January 14, 2025.
Bessa Simons, President of MUSIGA, described his death as a monumental loss to Ghanaian music.
Born in Kumasi in 1937, Osei’s journey began in his youth, mastering the saxophone during college in Sekondi. He later founded Osibisa in 1969, blending Afrobeat, highlife, and rock into a globally celebrated sound.
Osei’s early career included leading The Comets and studying music in London under a government grant. Despite challenges, his artistry left an indelible mark, inspiring generations and elevating Ghanaian music on the world stage.
