PUWU Reiterates Opposition To ECG Privatisation

The Public Utility Workers’ Union of TUC Ghana (PUWU) has reiterated its opposition against the privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In a statement to congratulate President John Mahama, PUWU said its position forms part of its commitment to sustainable solutions for the energy sector.

PUWU said it has taken notice of the recommendations of the proposal to the energy sector crisis from various interest groups.

The union, however, criticized the proposals for their lack of evidence and insufficient stakeholder engagement, particularly regarding those advocating for privatization.

“We are not unaware of the numerous local and international groups seeking to invest in the power sector, especially ECG. Many of these groups have resurfaced with similar agendas despite past opposition,” the statement noted.

PUWU further highlighted concerns over political interference in ECG’s management and the rising costs of inputs in the power sector, which contribute to higher electricity tariffs.

Despite these concerns, PUWU has expressed readiness to collaborate with government in finding permanent solutions to energy, housing and water situation and at affordable cost to Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister-designate John Abdulai Jinapor and President John Mahama  has highlighted the need for private sector involvement in ECG’s operations.

Speaking at his vetting on Monday, Mr Jinapor disclosed plans to set up a 7-member committee, chaired by technical experts, legal aspects, financial experts, and some industry players, and even somebody from the consumer side.
