Somanya Tragedy: Pragya Driver Lynched And Tricycle Set Ablaze Over Alleged Theft

A 30-year-old tricycle (popularly known as “Pragya”) operator, identified as Samuel Otu, has been lynched and his tricycle set on fire at Sawer, a suburb of Somanya in the Eastern Region.

The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, May 3, 2025, leaving the local community stunned.

According to residents, the victim—who hailed from Okperpiem, another suburb of Somanya—was suspected to have been attacked and stripped naked by unknown assailants around 2:30 a.m.

The police confirmed receiving a distress call at approximately 2:45 a.m. from the area. Responding officers arrived at the scene and discovered Otu’s lifeless body lying in a supine position near a gutter at Dorhetso, with his tricycle (registration number M-23-GR 7942) engulfed in flames beside him.

Investigators said traces of blood led them to a nearby house, where they found the victim’s clothes. “According to the intel we received, he was beaten in front of that house,” one officer disclosed.

Despite the close proximity of the scene to residential homes, residents claimed they neither saw the attack nor heard any cries for help during the night.

Otu’s body was transported to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital, where a physician assistant confirmed his death. It has since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

As of now, no arrests have been made, although police investigations are underway.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the attack may have been triggered by allegations of theft involving the deceased and some passengers he was allegedly transporting.

The police are urging members of the public to come forward with credible information to help identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
