Speaker Erred In Suspending MPs- Lawyer John Darko

Member of Parliament for Suame, Lawyer John Darko, has strongly criticized the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to suspend some MPs for two weeks.

According to Lawyer Darko, the Speaker has no right to suspend elected representatives of the people.

Speaking on Wontumi TV, Darko emphasized that the suspended MPs were elected by their constituents and therefore, the Speaker’s decision is unconstitutional. He argued that if the Speaker insists on enforcing the suspension, it would be a clear indication that he is aware of the implications of his actions.

Darko further stated that the Speaker lacks the power to suspend MPs and subsequently set up a committee to investigate the matter. He stressed that the House is composed of Members of Parliament, and the Speaker is not a part of this group. Therefore, the Speaker has no authority to establish a committee to probe the issue.

Darko concluded by saying that the Speaker’s actions must be guided by the Constitution and parliamentary orders. He questioned which specific order or constitutional provision the Speaker relied on to suspend the MPs and set up a committee.

In essence, Darko believes that the Speaker’s ruling was flawed, and he should rescind his decision to allow the suspended MPs to resume their duties.
