Sulley Muntari Opens Up On Special Bond With Asamoah Gyan

In a heartwarming display of camaraderie, Ghanaian football legend, Sulley Ali Muntari, has publicly expressed his deep affection and admiration for fellow national team icon, Asamoah Gyan, despite the latter’s past criticism of his former teammates.

During a fiery Instagram Live session on January 2, 2025, Gyan took aim at his former Black Stars colleagues, addressing several contentious topics. He notably accused them of lacking courage in the aftermath of his infamous World Cup penalty miss.

“Why didn’t the others step forward to take it? They were afraid. Cowards. I will say it — they are cowards,” he said during the live session.

However, Muntari, who was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2010 World Cup, dismissed Gyan’s accusations and instead emphasised his strong bond with the striker.

Speaking to 3Sports, he reflected on Gyan’s positive influence within the team.

“Asamoah Gyan was the light of the team when we played. Before big games, when there was pressure, he would sing and dance, which helped us relax and forget the stress. Maybe, he is unhappy about something, but I don’t think there was a lack of support. I love Asamoah Gyan,” Muntari said.

Gyan and Muntari shared a storied international career, representing Ghana together in three World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014) and amassing a combined 193 appearances for the Black Stars.
