The deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Antoinette Tsiboe-Darko, has emphasized that Ghana’s Constitution clearly mandates the Supreme Court to interpret Article 97 Clause 1.
Speaking on Movement TV/Wontumi Radio’s morning show, Dr. Tsiboe-Darko stressed that the Constitution grants the Supreme Court exclusive jurisdiction over constitutional interpretations. She cited Article 99 Clause 1, highlighting the Court’s authority.
“The Constitution is too clear; it’s only the Supreme Court that can determine the true meaning of the effect of Article 97 Clause 1,” Tsiboe-Darko stated.
Tsiboe-Darko also criticized Speaker of Parliament, Bagbin, for declaring a parliamentary seat vacant without prior engagement. “The Speaker did not engage anyone before making the declaration, which is unfair,” she noted.
Praising President Akufo-Addo’s governance, Tsiboe-Darko described him as a “philanthropist” who has successfully managed parliament’s “ungovernable” side.
Expressing disappointment and pain, Tsiboe-Darko urged unity among parliamentarians, stressing that their actions hinder the country’s progress. “They’re spoiling the country’s progress, not the government,” she emphasized.
Concluding her remarks, Tsiboe-Darko announced that the NPP will seek Supreme Court intervention on constitutional matters moving forward.
