Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed disappointment and concern over the bail conditions imposed on Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Dr. Bawumia described the conditions as “onerous” and a calculated attempt to prevent Wontumi’s timely release, sparking worries about the treatment of the NPP stalwart.
Dr. Bawumia made this known during a visit to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) office in Accra, intending to see Chairman Wontumi after learning he had been transferred from the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to the NIB facility. However, upon arrival, he discovered that Wontumi was not at the facility, as NIB officials claimed they could only grant access with authorization from EOCO, the agency holding Wontumi in custody.
The situation has raised questions about the coordination between state agencies and the handling of high-profile cases. Dr. Bawumia’s visit and subsequent comments underscore the significance of Chairman Wontumi’s case.
Despite the setback, Dr. Bawumia urged NPP supporters to remain calm and composed, assuring them that efforts are underway behind the scenes to secure Wontumi’s release. He emphasized that the party is working tirelessly to ensure Wontumi’s freedom, while calling for calm and restraint among party supporters during this challenging period.
The situation continues to unfold, with many watching closely to see how it develops.
