The Member of Parliament of Manso Nkwanta, George Obeng Takyi, has said that the greatest beneficiaries of tax paid to the state are the vulnerable.
Describing the 2023 “Nkabom” Budget as a panacea to Ghana’s economic recovery, the lawmaker noted, it will be prudent that Ghanaians accept the fact that taxes are critical and play a vital role in the development of every country and the need to willingly pay it.
Explaining this on Movement in the Morning show on Movement TV/Wontumi Radio, he used the free SHS policy as an example saying that “the greatest beneficiaries of this policy are the vulnerable in society- because this has lifted off certain burdens from them. The stress and ordeal they had to go through to get money to pay for their wards’ fee at the SHS has been minimized. Mind you, this policy was initiated kind courtesy the taxes we pay”.
He stressed that both the rich and the poor benefit from taxes one way or the other, and therefore urged Ghanaians to honour our tax obligations honestly.
“I’m calling on Ghanaians to discard the notions that taxes paid are embezzled by government officials to the detriment of the taxpayer”, he added.
On Property Rate, Hon. Obeng Takyi said it is such revenue that the government uses to provide security to the people living in those properties, provide accessible roads and other utilities like water and electricity, so it is not out of place for the government to collect such tax.
